Let go of hurtful words that have been spoken to you and also that you have spoken to someone else. Ask God for forgiveness and the strength to forgive others. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting. I don’t think it is possible to forget these things but it’s to learn to take “every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NASB2020). And it’s easy to say, very difficult to do. I am still doing quick “please do not let me bump into her in the lift” prayers everyday after a minor scuffle with a neighbour 4 months ago.
And two practical ways I can think of is: 1. pray whenever these things surface in your mind, 2. Try not to talk about them. “So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! But no one among mankind can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:5, 8 NASB2020).
I think God is saying that we need to “spring-clean” our hearts and minds of the old things so that we can be aware of the new things he is going to be doing in our lives. God is all about moving on and forgiveness. Jesus died on the cross once so that His blood redeemed us; past, present and future, from the pit of hell. “It is finished” (John 19:30)
I am sometimes unaware of the new things God has done in my life. And He is doing that constantly, renewing us inwardly sometimes, making new roadways in my life other times. On the last day of 2024, I recall where God has been at work within me, through me and around me as the Lectio 365 app suggests.
Heavenly Father, thank you for all the good things you have blessed me with. Looking back at the year, I feel your fullness within me because I have answered your call to serve. I ask for your forgiveness for the times I have chosen to ignore your prompting to be kind and to put the interest of others before mine. Give me zeal, an obedient heart and a willing spirit to accomplish your will next year. Open my eyes to behold the new thing you are going to do in my life so that I can glorify you. In the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Amen.
